.in TLD Crosses 130,000 Registrations

The Department of Information Technology (DIT) and National Internet Exchange of India (nixi.in) relaunched the .in Registry, which has recently resulted in a tremendous boost in registrations.

With 30 Registrars having been accredited to offer the .in TLD registrations worldwide to customers, the number of registrants has grown from 6,500 to 130,000. The entire process of registration is online. The opening of the .in Registry has significantly improved and broadened the availability of the domain names.

In order to bring about a deeper penetration of this TLD, a new Internet domain name policy framework plan was announced by the Government in October 2004. The policy aimed at removing the restrictions in the existing procedures and pushed to introduce a liberal and market-friendly approach to register large number of .in domain names.
